The Huang family is headed to Taiwan to shoot the third season premiere of Fresh off the Boat, according to Vulture. In the season two finale, we learned how patriarch Louis (Randall Park) came to America all those years ago. He beat out his younger brother Gene (played by Ken Jeong) during a visit to the hot springs after their father confessed he only had the funds to send one.
The episode opens with Gene’s arrival into Orlando where may the announcement that he’s engaged to be married to a consultant named Margaret. Even though Gene’s life has turned out fine, he’s still upset he wasn’t the one to go to America. Maybe his life could’ve been even better? So after an argument, he heads back to Taiwan with their mother in tow.
Louis is determined to make things right with the family so he announces they’re all flying to the motherland for the wedding—and so Jessica (Constance Wu) can collect her $200.
“Knowing we were already picked up (thanks ABC!), we thought it would be fun to end season two with a cliffhanger that would set the table for us to start season three in a really epic way, with the family arriving in Taiwan,” showrunner Nahnatchka Khan told Vulture. “It’s also a callback to the pilot episode, where the Huang’s arrive in Orlando, the quintessential ‘fish out of water.’
Now they’re in Taiwan and, even though Jessica and Louis were born there, the boys weren’t — they were born in America and have never been out of the country. It’s that idea of not quite fitting into either place, of being both Asian and American. That’s a really cool thing we’re excited to explore.”
Fresh off the Boat returns to ABC on October 11.
