Norman Lear made a special announcement during the premiere of his documentary Norman Lear: Just Another Version Of You on Thursday. The legendary creator of shows including Good Times, All in the Family, and The Jeffersons, said the reimagining of his other famous show One Day at a Time would be released in January and a representative from Netflix has confirmed the news to Variety Latino.
“It’s going to air in January,” Lear told Vulture, who first reported the news. “It’s Netflix, so you make 13 before they air.”
The 2016 version will focus on a single mother-of-two who is a military veteran played by Six Feet Under and Queen of the South star Justina Machado. Her widowed mother, played by legendary actress Rita Moreno, will live in the home to help raise her grandchildren.
“It’s altogether different, and it’s fabulous,” Lear added. “The talent is great. Rita Moreno!”
The original One Day at a Time aired from 1975-1984 and it starred Bonnie Franklin, Mackenzie Phillips, and Valerie Bertinelli. Bertinelli and Franklin were reunited, before the latter’s death in 2013, for an episode of TV Land’s Hot in Cleveland during season 2. Is there any chance that Bertinelli or Phillips would make a guest appearance on the Netflix version?
Showrunner Gloria Calderon-Kellett told Variety Latino exclusively, “we’re working on it.”
