In 2007 Demi got the chance to work with Disney Channel and we first saw her on "As The Bell Rings." Soon she would go on to get her true big break.
In 2008 she landed the role that changed her life in the tv movie “Camp Rock” starring The Jonas Brothers. Demi played Mitchie Torres, the shy girl with the big voice and soon began recording songs and was featured in the film’s soundtrack.
One year later she was the star of her own show, "Sonny With A Chance" and launched her debut album "Don't Forget" which was an immediate success.
Demi’s career rocket launched and was the opening act for the Jonas Brothers Tour. That same year she reprised her role in “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.”
But things starts to get a little hectic for the young tween queen when she was on tour and made headlines when she reportedly had an altercation with a dancer. Soon after, news broke out that she was going into rehab to seek treatment for “emotional and physical issues.” Much later we would come to find out that the star was suffering from an eating disorder and had been harming herself through cutting.
On Jan. 28, 2011 she was released from rehab and after completing her treatment she released her single "Skyscraper" from her upcoming album "Unbroken." The powerful ballad showcased Demi in a new light and the singer started opening up about her inner demons and struggles with alcohol, drugs, eating disorders and depression.
The “Neon Lights” singer took the time to focus on herself, on things that made her happy and welcomed all the support from her loyal fan base “The Lovatics.”
She distanced herself from all the bad people and negative energy and realized that things needed to change. She opened up about her drug addiction and was more honest than ever before.
“Something I’ve never talked about before, but with my drug use I could hide it to where I would sneak drugs. I couldn’t go without 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes,” she told Access Hollywood. “I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I’d sneak to the bathroom and I’d do it.”
Things soon started to change, she released her fourth album “Demi” and became an advocate for anti-bullying, mental illnesses and doing everything in her power to make a difference to let people know that it is ok to ask for help.
“The best advice I can give to anyone going through a rough patch is to never be afraid to ask for help,” Demi told fans.
She began to let us into her world and know the pain and suffering she had gone through.
“I think at 19 years old, I had a moment where I was like, ‘Oh my God… that is alcoholic behavior. [It’s] no longer, I’m young and rebellious and out having fun, it was, wow, I’m one of those people…I gotta get my s*** together.”
Demi penned a letter for Seventeen where she discussed her eating disorder which had unraveled at a young age.
“I started compulsively overeating at a very young age. And then I almost stopped eating altogether at the age of 12, after being harassed by kids at school, for being “fat”. My eating disorder will continue to affect me for the rest of my life, but I’m proud to say that I got the help I needed, and am now the happiest and healthiest I have ever been!”
She embraced her new life with arms wide open and joined campaigns such as Jed Foundation for the Love Is Louder Than the Pressure To Be Perfect Campaign which encourages everyone to love who they are and embrace their “flaws.”
In 2014 she released her book, “Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year,” an inspirational book to help those in need.
“When you are no longer hiding anything, you don’t worry about what is going to get out,” she admits. “I don’t care who knows about my life, and now that I am an open book a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” she commented in an interview with DailyMail.
Demi continues to power on through her singing and acting career more aware that she has the power to persuade and help many young fans all around the world, something that she loves doing.
At this moment Demi is a happy woman who is sharing a wonderful relationship with Wilmer Valderrama.
“He is my absolute best friend in the whole world that I happen to be attracted to,” she confessed to AndPop.com.
Every once in a while you’ll see her post cute pictures of them together on her Instagram.
