NN

Peru’s Ministry of Culture announced that NN by Héctor Gálvez will be the South American country’s official entry to compete in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 87th Academy Awards.

The film gets its name from the acronym that means “Ningún Nombre” or “No Name” in reference to unidentified human remains. NN centers on Fidel (Paul Vega), a forensic specialists in charge of collecting human remains from hidden mass graves, finding their identities and returning them to their loved ones. One particular case becomes much more personal for the seasoned field man as a desperate widow tries to find closure through what’s left of an unknown male.

After premiering at the Rome Film Festival, Gálvez’ moody film went on to screen at festivals such as Palm Springs, Miami, Seattle, and Cartagena. The feature will open theatrically in Peru on September 17th.

In 2010 Claudia Llosa‘s The Milk of Sorrow (La Teta Asustada) became the first-ever Peruvian film to be nominated for an Academy Award.

The Academy will release a shortlist in December and the final five nominees will be announced in January 2016.
