Univision announced on Tuesday, May 12, during their Upfront presentation in New York, that they will continue working alongside Simon Cowell to produce La Banda 2, a music-based, multi-media competition show in search for the next Latin girl group.

The network and Cowell’s SYCO Entertainment, with the help of Haim Saban’s Saban Brands and co-produced by FremantleMedia Latin America, are currently producing the first season of the show, La Banda, which is looking for the next Latin boy band. Auditions were held earlier this year and the program will air in September.

“I am absolutely delighted to be announcing season 2 of La Banda,” Cowell said in a statement.  “The enthusiasm for this format is already very exciting and most importantly we are seeing some incredibly promising talent.”

La Banda 2 will follow the same format as the first season, hosting auditions in various cities around the U.S and Puerto Rico searching for Latina female contestants to be part of the next global girl super group, which is set to air in 2016 during La Banda’s Sunday night slot.

Currently Ricky Martin is co-executive producing the first season as well as acting as a mentor and will be the group’s manager after they receive their recording contract with Sony Music Latin. Also set to be judges are Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz and Italian star Laura Pausini.

During the Upfronts, Univision emphasized the growing importance of music-based programming for Latin broadcaster.

“Music plays a central role in the lives of Hispanics and we are pleased to continue to bring new musical projects to our audience via this exciting new platform,” said Alberto Ciurana, president, Programming and Content, Univision Communications Inc. “We’re thrilled to collaborate once again with Simon Cowell’s SYCO Entertainment as part of our commitment to entertain and empower Hispanic Americans through the programming they crave.”
