Jack Lowden has been cast as the legendary rock band singer, Morrissey. Directed by first-timer Mark Gill, the project will focus on the singers teenage years in Manchester leading up to the 1982 formation of The Smiths with Johnny Marr.
In 2014, Lowden won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance as Oswald in the 2013 adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts. The actor, who has appeared on many stage productions, also had a supporting role in the 2016 BBC miniseries War & Peace.
The Smiths, formed in Manchester in 1982, became one of the leading alternative rock bands in the 1980s. The band consisted of vocalist Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce.
The group released four studio albums, The Smiths (1984), Meat Is Murder (1985), The Queen Is Dead (1986) and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987). Three of the albums appeared on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Following the dissolution of The Smiths in 1987, Morrissey launched a successful solo career. He released 10 albums between 1988 and 2014, the most successful of which, 2004’s You Are the Quarry.
According to Deadline, principal photography for Steven begins in April, a release date has yet to be confirmed.
