In 1990 the science fiction psychological drama Flatliners made its big debut with an all-star cast including Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon. A reboot was announced with a 2017 release date but it seems that may not be the case at all.
Sutherland, who played medical student Nelson Wright in the original, announced the new film is actually a sequel and that he will be reprising his role!
“I play a professor at the medical university,” Sutherland told Metro UK. “It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I’m the same character I was in the original Flatliners but that I have changed my name and I’ve done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film.”
He added, “I loved making the first film and when I was asked if I would be interested in taking part in this, it didn’t take more than a minute to say yes.”
The new film stars Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, Ellen Page, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemons and will be directed by Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).
Flatliners is set to be released in U.S. theaters on August 18, 2017.
