Aubrey Plaza is an actress, comedian, and bonafide bad ass. But she says it’s her Latina roots that she’s most proud of when she was honored by the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) Latino Media Awards with the Lupe Ontiveros Awards recently. Plaza has managed to carve out a successful career in the general market thanks to her dry wit and skills as a “Puerto Rican Ninja,” as she calls it.

“I dedicate this award to my family, my culture, and this beautiful community that I’m a part of, she said during her speech. “It’s yet another thing I can use to prove to everybody that I’m Puerto Rican.”

You may know Plaza from her extensive work on the small and big screen. Most notably she starred on the hit NBC comedy, Parks and Recreation as well as on the big screen opposite Seth Rogen in Funny People. She’s also dabbled in voice work after she was chosen to help bring to life celebrity feline Grumpy Cat in Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever. You’ll find her in theaters again on July 8 in the upcoming film, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.
