Teo Calderon is a man who is educated, cocky, and good looking. You can tell he’s used to being the man with the plan who everyone listens to. So it’s no wonder that his world was rocked the moment Camila Vargas walked into his life. She’s not a woman easily impressed by the things most regular women might flail over. And that is what attracts him to her the most: her power, her money, and her cunning ability to see right through him.
Calderon, who is portrayed by Mark Consuelos, on USA Network’s Queen of the South, still has a bit of story to unravel throughout the show’s freshman season. Consuelos spoke to Variety Latino about playing this suave character and what viewers can expect to see happen between him and Camila Vargas (played by Veronica Falcon).
“He’s definitely a thrill seeker, Consuelo told Variety Latino about Calderon. “He’s definitely attracted to the idea of the power and the money. I think he’s also probably attracted to the idea of how dangerous this person is [Vargas] that he’s getting intimately involved with in business.”
He added, “All indications should be to run away. “Like,’don’t do this! Why are you doing this?’ I think it’ll be revealed later on or maybe in the next season but I think that he’s one of those people that’s really really smart. Sometimes those people are too smart for their own good.
They have this hubris or arrogance that they think they can get away with certain things and they probably have their whole life. They’ve been able to skirt danger and just barely make it a few times. There’s sort of some attraction to that.”
There have been indications that Calderon is even attracted to the beautiful Vargas beyond business. Could there be an attempt to take things further?
“I think that you’ll see very soon! She’s not someone that would so casually do something like that, I don’t think, Consuelos said. “Whereas my character may attempt something like that but I think that if she would do something like that it would be a calculated move.
It’s a very interesting relationship. I really enjoyed working with Veronica Falcon. She’s amazing and so lovely to work with.”
Although the father-of-three had to remain mostly tight-lipped with spoilers, he’s grateful to have been chosen to play Calderon on the show.
“People are digging it! When I was reading the scripts, I thought ‘wow, this is really good. I wonder how they will execute this for TV?’ It’s like a movie! There’s just so much happening. I’m getting a lot of great response from it so I’m happy people are enjoying it.”
Tune in for an all-new episode of Queen of the South Thursday night at 10pm ET/PT and 9pm CT only on USA Network.
