UPDATE Saturday, December 6:

Rapper Beanie Sigel is reportedly awake after having undergone surgery on Friday afternoon. According to police, the other man involved in the shooting incident refused to be treated and had not been cooperative when interviewed by police. Pleasantville Police Chief Jose Ruiz alluded to there possibly being “some type of family relationship” between Sigel and the other man, but offered little more, stating “apparently, there was a struggle of some type, which led to Mr. Grant being shot and that is all we have at this point.”

PREVIOUSLY:

Dwight Grant, better known as rapper Beanie Sigel, is said to be critically injured after having been shot at around 9:45 a.m. on Friday, December 5, outside a halfway house in Pleasantville, New Jersey.

Jose Ruiz, Pleasantville Police Chief, told NBC 10 that the shooting followed a physical altercation.

Grant’s attorney, Fortunato Perri, Jr., told reporters his client was shot in the back, was taken to a hospital and is currently undergoing surgery. He also stated that he did not believe Grant to be the intended victim of the shooting. Another man was reportedly wounded and is being questioned by authorities.

Philadelphia-born Sigel, 40, is currently on probation, after being released from prison in August. He served two years for tax evasion, reportedly owing almost $750,000 in back taxes, and was carrying out the remainder of his sentence at a halfway house along Spruce Avenue in Pleasantville, where the shooting took place. According to police, he was wearing a monitoring bracelet at the time of the incident.

Sigel was once signed to Jay Z’s Roc-a-Fella Records, but the two had a public falling out after Sigel recorded a less than amicable track directed at his former boss. In 2011, he told XXL, “Whatever I felt this dude Jay did wrong to me, it can’t outweigh the one thing he did do for me – he gave me an opportunity. Dude gave me an opportunity. A lot of people don’t get opportunities. He gave me that. That outweighs everything. I need that in black and white. I got caught in the moment and put my feelings out there. I should have never done that.”

Sigel had a comeback concert scheduled for later this month in his hometown.
