The Emmy awards are just days away, which means TV’s biggest stars are making the final touches on their acceptance speeches (unless, maybe, you’re you’re Jon Hamm). “Late Night” host and “Saturday Night Live” alum Seth Meyers is set to host the fete for the first time and we’re running down some of the things you can look forward to during the hours-long broadcast Monday night.
No Selfies. No dis to Ellen DeGeneres, but this year’s Emmy host, Seth Meyers, isn’t really interested in any social media stunts. He tells Variety, “We aren’t really approaching it that way. We’ll see what comes up. The nice thing is when events happen now, Twitter makes it digital without you having to do anything.” We can respect that. He did, however, joke that maybe he’ll “take out my Blackberry and try to download an app. We’ll see how long that takes.” Ha!
Jokes! So what will people be talking about? Hopefully his “really good jokes.” Meyers says, “We hope that by the time the monologue’s over […] that people are going to be good and ready for the next few hours of awards.” If you want a preview of Seth’s award show hosting skills, check out his monologue from the 2011 ESPYs below.
A Breaking Bad reunion. This is the last year the beloved drama will be in contention for an Emmy — so it’ll be nice to see our favorite “BB” stars reunite at the show. Both Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are nominated in the acting categories, and the two have already rekindled their on-screen magic in this hilarious Emmy promo. (What we wouldn’t give to see the Jackson bros of “Barely Legal Pawn” face off against nominee Julia Louis-Dreyfus once more at Monday night’s show…sigh).
A ‘Saturday Night Live’ takeover. “Live from LA, it’s Monday night!” OK, so it doesn’t exactly have the same ring to it… but with so many of Meyers’ fellow “SNL” stars nominated for awards (Amy Poehler! Fred Armisen! Kristen Wiig! Kate McKinnon!), we can’t imagine that one (or all?) won’t join the first-time Emmy host for a little comic relief at some point. Maybe even a passing-of-the-torch sketch with past Emmy host (and the guy whose late-night job he filled) Jimmy Fallon? The possibilities are endless! Meyers already hinted at calling in a favor from “two very funny ladies” who may or may not have been the highlight of last-years Emmy awards — don’t you tease us, Seth!
Stars at work. What, you thought they were just there to collect trophies? Look out for actors and nominees like Kerry Washington, Halle Berry, Bryan Cranston, Zooey Deschanel, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Woody Harrelson, Adam Levine, Matthew McConaughey, Julianna Margulies, Jim Parsons, Julia Roberts, Gwen Stefani and Sofia Vergara to hit the stage to awkwardly read scripted banter before presenting an Emmy or two. Sofía’s cha-cha-fying of the English language is always entertaining.
Tears (yours, ours, everyone’s!). Especially if Netflix’s breakout hit “Orange Is the New Black” beats Emmy staples like “Modern Family” and “The Big Bang Theory” in the Best Comedy Series category. We’ve barely recovered from Uzo Aduba’s emotional acceptance of the Best Guest Comedy Actress trophy at last week’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
A Robin Williams tribute. Following the recent and sudden death of the comedian, the Emmys quickly worked to include a special memorial segment for the actor. The tribute will be presented by Williams’ longtime friend and fellow funnyman Billy Crystal, as well as include a performance by singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles.
The 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards airs live Monday, August 25th, at 8 PM EST on NBC.
