Soap opera star Nathaniel Marston, 40, will likely live the rest of his life as a quadriplegic, following his car crash on Oct. 30 in Nevada that left him critically injured.
The actor’s mother, Elizabeth Jackson, released a statement to Entertainment Tonight about the condition of her son after he underwent surgery on Nov. 4. Unfortunately things did not go as planned.

“In the early morning hours of November 5 his heart stopped on two separate occasions requiring doctors to use an external pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat. He remains in critical condition, fighting pneumonia, a heart infection and irregular pulse. The relatively positive prognosis, which followed his previous surgery, has dimmed. It is now believed that the hope of recovering upper body function was premature and that Marston will most likely live out his life as a quadriplegic,” reads the statement.
His mother does remain optimistic now that Marston is communicating. “[He is] able to mouth sentences since having the breathing tube removed from his mouth and relocated to his throat via a tracheotomy,” she says.
On late Tuesday, Nov. 10, Jackson updated fans and family members on her personal Facebook account on the status of her son’s condition. “No change today… Another rough day… Nate is scheduled for a brain scan tonight and if fluid has not dissipated he will have surgery to reduce pressure on brain on Wed Nov 11,” she wrote. “Doing my best to remain strong. Must rest now. Thank you so much for your love, kindness, prayers and positive and generous support. It really means so much to me. Sending all of you love, light and Gods blessings.”
Marston is best known for his role as Michael McBain on One Life To Live. He also appeared on As the World Turns until 1999.
