Rumors spread across the internet all week that singer Frank Ocean would be releasing the highly anticipate follow-up to his sophomore album, 2012’s Channel Orange. It turns out, the rumors are true. Ocean took to his official website to make the announcement on Saturday.
The new album entitled, Boys Don’t Cry was recorded in London’s famed Abbey Road studios and will be released in July 2016. His post shows a library card with seventeen dates crossed off starting with the original release date of July 2015 and ending with July 2016.
Although there was a small leak that took place in February during a listening party, there hasn’t been much talk about what can be expected as far as sound. Producer James Ho, better known as Malay, gave some insight to Pitchfork in March.
“I always tell people: when he’s ready, the world is gonna get it,” Malay said. “It could be tomorrow… well not tomorrow, but maybe a month. We’ve all been working hard. He’s been working super hard. I feel like he’s working harder than he’s ever worked in his life. I’m excited for everyone to hear it. I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised, for sure.”
He added, “A lot of the stuff on this new album was done with a handheld mic sitting in the control room. Frank’s exploring different vibes completely on this album. I wouldn’t say it’s vocally looser but just his mentality; it doesn’t seem as meticulous at certain times.”
One fan that will definitely be happy is British-born singer Adele who was extremely vocal about her disappointment with the delay. She told Rolling Stone in November, “I’m just f**king waiting for Frank fucking Ocean to come out with his album. It’s taking so f**king long.”
She added, “That sounds so stupid, coming from me, doesn’t it?”
