It’s a good thing Gabrielle Ruiz studied ballet years ago because her character Valencia Perez is getting ready to slip them on for season two of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Variety Latino caught up with the Mexican-American actress at the “10 Latinos to Watch” party to find out what adventures we can expect from her character when the season returns to The CW on Friday, October 21.
“For my character Valencia and for a lot of the season regular characters, they all left season one with new journeys and new challenges. She broke up with her boyfriend of 15 years and there’s a whole new life ahead for her. One thing I can tease is that we’re kicking up our musical numbers a notch. Rachel Bloom has a song in the premiere that really has an effect on what we saw on Beyonce‘s Lemonade so get ready for that! One other thing that leaked is that I’ll be putting pointe shoes back on.
I’ve been a dancer all my life. I put away those pointe shoes about 10 years ago and they’re going to make a little splash in one of the numbers. It leaked recently that Vincent [Rodriguez III] and I would be going back to ballet class. They’re asking us to do things that I love to do on this show that you don’t see on television often. It’s pushing my limits as a dancer again, which I’m loving. That’s what this show is; it’s a true triple threat. That’s what we call ourselves: actors, singers, and dancers. They are really utilizing us in a bigger way than last year.”
Now that Valencia is single after so long, will she focus on working on herself or will she try dating again? According to Ruiz, she’ll be doing a bit of both.
“There’s going to be a lot of things going on. She’s going to get a taste of her own medicine, let’s just say that. She’s definitely going to have to learn to date again.”
