Thalia On the Possibility of Returning

Thalia is known all over the world for her top-rated Spanish-language soap operas, record-breaking albums, and her ability to chart high on ‘Best of’ lists after walking red carpets. But it’s her fashion and accessories line Thalia Sodi for Macy’s that has the Mexican superstar excited these days.

“I’m very emotional about all the good things that have been happening with the new collection,” the actress and wife of Tommy Mottola told Variety Latino during a recent interview in Los Angeles. “This is a great opportunity for a Hispanic woman to have such a presence at one of the most iconic stores in the United States. The truth is, I’m proud to represent our community. I feel that this is a collection that everyone will love, not just Latinas. Every shopper can find something they’ll like.”

While fashion may be her focus right now, she does not dismiss the idea of going back to TV one day, but only when the right project falls into her hands. Working on telenovelas for at least a decade took a toll on the actress.

“I love the idea [of doing television],” she said. “I love acting; it’s something I’m very passionate about. I love scripted television and becoming so many different people and telling their stories. But I also love my freedom and the personal time that I have right now. I have all the control over my schedule, and that’s how I like it.”

She added, “But I have been looking, for quite a few years now, for the right project for me. Something that I can do, something spectacular, that doesn’t require me to record for long periods of time. I think I’ve been left traumatized with all the hours I had to work when I was working on Spanish soap operas. I equate being on TV to being tied up in chains, in a room, I don’t know [laughs].”

One passion this mother-of-two can’t seem to give up is her love of making music. Her newest album, Latina  —her thirteenth studio album—, debuted on April 21. She’s hitting the road for the first leg of the tour this fall.

“I’m extremely proud of my new album,” she said. “I’m very grateful to my fans who are supporting it and who understand how much I love reinventing myself. They accept all my craziness in every way. This album was a way of me returning to my roots, a bit of who Thalia is with a Latin sound, without losing the woman that I am today. I’m extremely happy for how much fans are enjoying it and how they have come along with me on this musical journey. I’ve also heard a lot of great feedback about the collaborations on the album with Maluma, De La Ghetto, Jacob Forever, etc.”, she told us.

The singer added, “Now I’m just prepping for the tour that kicks off in September. The first phase will take place in the United States and Mexico. Next year, God willing, if we’re all healthy and well, we’ll be going to Central and South America. Beyond that, who knows? Stay tuned.”
