Eastbound & Down star Danny McBride is heading back to HBO alongside Walton Goggins in the new comedy Vice Principals. The series tells the story of Lincoln High School and the two people who almost run it, the vice principals. McBride and Goggins star as the two administrators, who are in an epic power struggle, vying for the top spot: to be school principal.
Discovering their ambitions, the outgoing principal shares some advice with the combative duo. “Whoever it is, remember one thing, said Principal Welles played by Bill Murray. “It’s all about the students. It’s not about you two.”
When a new principal is announced, the battle to the top really begins. But will they destroy each other along the way or will one of them succeed? Hilarity, destruction, and shenanigans are sure to ensue.
During their debut at SXSW, McBride recalled asking Murray, whom he starred alongside on Aloha and Rock the Kasbah, to play the cameo after bumping into him on a flight. “He took us to P.F. Chang’s in the Atlanta airport. He was just selling us hard on Charleston. He loves it. He lives there. So we came back to shoot there, we were trying to figure out who was going to be Principal Welles, and I was like, ‘Maybe we can try Bill and see if he’d be up for it.’
So I sent him an email. Didn’t know really if he’d respond to it or not, asking him if he’d be interested in checking out the script. He kind of responded — ‘Please deliver me a hard copy at the RiverDogs baseball game tonight.”
“I went there, we made the drop-off,” McBride added. “He wrote this really nice e-mail back. ‘I would be thrilled to play Principal Whats-his-name.’
HBO reports that two seasons have already been shot of the dark comedy premiering on July 17.
