“I can and I did,” said Gina Rodriguez on stage at the 72nd Annual Golden Globes when she received her award for Best Actress in a TV series for “Jane the Virgin.”
The 30 year-old Chicago native held in her hands her first Golden Globe proudly representing the Latino community.
“This award represents so much more than myself. It represents a culture that wants to see themselves as heroes.”
But Gina brings more to the table than just diversity and culture, she brings real talent and humility that has gotten her very far and will keep taking her career further.
Variety Latino’s Rising Star of the Year is shining more than ever and she is doing it while still staying focused and keeping her feet on the ground.
Starting her career with cameos here and there in television shows like “Law & Order” and “Army Wives,” to her big screen debut with “Filly Brown,” Gina has stayed very centered.
It’s been a long time since we last saw a young Latina actress have this much success and break barriers on TV like Gina is doing. The last being America Ferrera, whom like Gina, was well accepted in the English market with her series “Ugly Betty.”
Of course, we can’t forget Sofia Vergara’s success story on American television since we are all well aware of how loved her “Modern Family” character is by audiences.
Last night, Gina had more than enough reasons to celebrate, not only did she receive her first major award but her series on The CW has been renewed for a second season.
“My father used to make me say every morning, ‘Today’s going to be a great day. I can and I will.’ Well, Dad, today’s a great day. I can and I did.”
Her proud parents and supporting sisters, were there to witness the first of many more dreams come true for Gina!
