Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez, was incorrectly named Miss Universe 2015 at the annual pageant that took place on Sunday, December 20th in Las Vegas after host Steve Harvey accidentally crowned the wrong winner.
Moments after celebrating her triumph on stage with previous Miss Universe winner Paulina Vega, the 21 year-old had to give her crown to the actual winner, Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, when Harvey admitted that he made a “terrible mistake.”
Gutiérrez held her head high and broke her silence in a video posted to the Miss Universe official Twitter account shortly after the ceremony.
“Everything happens for a reason”, Gutiérrez stated gracefully with tears in her eyes. “I am happy for all of what I did and seeing this dream through. I’m so happy. Thank you all for voting for me.”
Fans and social media erupted after the uncomfortable moment while Harvey took Twitter to apologize and take full responsibility for the situation stating that “he felt terrible” and that it was an honest mistake.
Miss Philippines, still shocked and unsure of her new title, also reacted to the shocking moment saying in another video posted on Miss Universe’s Twitter account, “It’s a very nontraditional crowning moment. Very 2015!”
In a post-interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 26 year-old pageant star still seemed confused as to whether she was truly the winner, “I had to ask my new manager if I really did win. Am I really Miss Universe? Are you going to take the crown away from me now? And she said, no, no you are really the winner.” Adding, “But I can’t help but think about Ariadna as well, it’s very confusing.”
Your style is really unique compared to other folks I
have read stuff from. Thank you for posting when you have the opportunity,
Guess I’ll just bookmark this page.
How come she used an interpreter during the contest proper when she can speak and understand English as seen in the backstage recorded video?
Team Columbia.
Miss Columbia will star as Sophia Vergara’s little sister on Modern Family now.
