Hailee Steinfeld has racked up some pretty serious movie credits throughout her young career. She’s starred in True GritRomeo & JulietThe Homesman, and many more. Finally, the 19-year-old will get to have a bit fun playing awkward high school student Nadine Byrd in the comedy, The Edge of Seventeen.

Being popular has never been an easy task for Nadine, who at the age of 13 wore a hairdo that looks like Pedro’s from Napolean Dynamite. In the new red band trailer released for the film, the young Byrd questions if God is even “up there.” As she and her best and only friend in the world Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) grow up, the latter starts up a relationship with the former’s hot older brother (played by Blake Jenner).

After being “abandoned” by Krista, Nadine reaches out to the two people she feels she could talk to, her mother (played by Kyra Sedgwick) and her teacher (played by Woody Harrelson). Neither really pay any mind to poor Nadine, so it’s up to her to get past her insecurities and awkwardness to not only survive in high school but also get the attention of the boy she likes.

The Edge of Seventeen was written, produced and directed by Kelly Fremon. It hits theaters on September 30.
