The City of Beverly Hills confirmed Monday that it was able to cut its water usage by 26 percent for the month of January after warning letters were sent to customers with high water usage in November.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the city sent letters to 86 single-family residential water customers, including a few high-profiled customers like David Geffen and Amy Poehler.

Poehler was reportedly charged more than $2,200 for water use at one property, which exceeded 170,000 gallons between May 14 and July 14. Geffen was charged more than $30,000 for using 1.6 million gallons at one property.

“We believe that the penalty surcharges have had an impact,” city spokeswoman Therese Kosterman told the Times.

Others who received high-consumption warning letters included Will & Grace co-creator Jason Mutchnick, real estate developer Geoff Palmer and producer Brett Ratner.

Ratner said he was not aware of the excessive water use at his home. After investigating, he said he discovered multiple pipe leaks and promised to repair the entire water line, according to a statement.
