Marvel CEO Entangled in Defamation Lawsuit

Isaac Perlmutter, Chief Executive of Marvel Entertainment is involved in a bizarre lawsuit with his Palm Beach neighbor, Harold Peerenboom.

The suit claims Perlmutter and his wife sent out a series of anonymous slanderous letters to members of their Palm Beach neighborhood portraying him as a “self-confessed child molester and homosexual pedophile.”

According to The New York Times, the hate-mail campaign, is a cheap attempt by Perlmutter to pressure Peerenboom, to leave the gated community where they both own homes. One of the letters started, “Today I write you to warn you about Harold Peerenboom of 8 Sloans Curve Road who is a sexual predator.”

The lawsuit claims the riff between the two men started over a tennis club in Sloan’s Curve and whether the tennis center management contract had to be submitted to a public bid process.

Peerenboom filed a defamation lawsuit in Palm Beach, claiming intentional infliction of emotional distress, tortuous interference and civil conspiracy. In New York, Peerenboom also has subpoenaed Marvel for Perlmutter’s emails to help support his Florida suit.

In court documents, Marvel’s attorney Richard C. Tarlow revealed that “after conducting discovery into Mr. Perlmutter’s personal files, personal electronic devices, and personal email addresses, Petitioner has failed to adduce evidence to support his claims in the main Florida action.”

Perlmutter, who sold Marvel to Disney for $4 billion in 2009, has denied all allegations.
