The family of Philando Castile has legal representation as of Tuesday afternoon. Former TV judge Glenda Hatchett, who previously was chief judge of Fulton County Juvenile Court in Atlanta, held a press conference with Castile’s mother Valerie in St. Paul, Minnesota to make the announcement.
“We will aggressively pursue justice on his behalf,” Hatchett told reporters at the press conference.
She also took to Twitter to share her dedication to the case with her followers and to let them know she’s is ready to fight for Philando and his family.
“Thank you…I will make sure that justice bends in the direction of the righteous,” she told a follower who announced she was representing the Castile family.
Philando was fatally shot by St. Anthony, Minnesota police officer Jeronimo Yanez on July 6. He was pulled over by Officer Yanez and another officer and asked for license and registration. Philando alerted the officers that he was licensed to carry a concealed weapon and had one in the car. He was fatally shot as he put his hands up.
His girlfriend Diamond Reynolds, who was in the car during the incident, live-streamed a video of the aftermath on Facebook.
Hatchett’s Atlanta law firm added on her behalf, “I am deeply concerned about what seems to be an epidemic of African-American men being killed by police officers. “We have often seen demonstrations and debates and I raise the critical question, ‘When will there be systemic reform?'”
