Lady Gaga has reportedly been banned from China after participating in the Mayor’s Address to discuss kindness and compassion alongside His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet on Sunday. The Guardian reports that the Communist party’s propaganda department reportedly issued an ‘important instruction’ blocking the singer’s entire repertoire from the mainland.
CNN attempted to get confirmation of the news from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Hong Lei, but he declined to comment.
Gaga, who has not commented to the possible ban either, shared a message from her meeting with the Tibetan spiritual leader via her official Twitter account on Sunday.
“Thank you for this special day,” she wrote. “Science tells us kindness improves health, let’s take care of the body of our nation.”
This is not the first time the singer/actress/activist has had issues with the communist country. In 2011, songs from her Born This Way album scored Gaga a spot on the government blacklist for three years. They lifted the ban just in time for her album ARTPOP, although it was still heavily censored.
Gaga’s name joins a long list of celebrities who have been banned from China for associating with the Dalai Lama, including Selena Gomez, Richard Gere, Bjork, Oasis, Bon Jovi, and Maroon 5.
