It seems like only yesterday that fans of Grey’s Anatomy were mourning the death of Dr. Derek Shepherd, or as he’s better known to fans as McDreamy, after a car accident last April. But now Patrick Dempsey, who portrayed the doctor for eleven seasons admits he probably stayed too long during an interview with People,.

“I’m very grateful for Grey’s Anatomy,” Dempsey said. “It’s given me the opportunity to do everything. But at the same time, there was a cost. I think after a certain period of time, no matter how much money you make, you want control out of your own schedule.”

He added, “It had been long enough. It was time for me to move on with other things and other interests. I probably should have moved on a couple of years earlier. I stayed a bit longer than I should have.”

Dempsey is currently promoting the romantic comedy Bridget Jones’s Baby where he plays Jack, a well-to-do billionaire who vies for the attention of our heroine played by Renee Zellweger. Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) has proven to be a worthy adversary in the past, so hopefully, handsome Jack is ready for a fight!

The film opens in theaters on September 16.
