“American Hustle” y “Gravity” son las más nominadas a los Premios Oscar este año con 10 nominaciones cada una. “12 Years a Slave” les sigue con nueve. El trío competirá por el premio a la mejor película en una categoría que este año cuenta con nueve participantes, incluyendo también “Captain Phillips,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Her”, “Nebraska,” “Philomena,” y “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
Los miembros de AMPAS (la Academia de Motion Picture Arts & Sciences), quienes votan en los Premios Oscar, siempre ofrecen algunas sorpresas, pero este año nos han sorprendido más de lo normal. En un año muy competitivo, una gran cantidad de buen trabajo no fue reconocido, incluyendo el de Paul Greengrass, Tom Hanks, Robert Redford y Emma Thompson, mientras que favoritas de los críticos como “Inside Llewyn Davis,” “Saving Mr. Banks” y “Lone Survivor” no tuvieron mucha atención.
La inclusión de Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), Christian Bale y Amy Adams (“American Hustle) es una sorpresa. Las nominaciones de Bale y Adams, junto con las de Bradley Cooper y Jennifer Lawrence, significan que una película de David O. Russell ha sido representada en las cuatro categorías de actuación por el segundo año consecutivo. Russell mismo es un doble nominado, como escritor y director, así como lo fue el año pasado por “Silver Linings Playbook.” Sólo seis otros cineastas han tenido doble nominaciones por dos años consecutivos en sus carreras.
Alfonso Cuarón (“Gravity”) es un triple nominado, en las categorías de mejor película, dirección y edición. Eso también es cierto para Spike Jonze, en las categorías de mejor película, guión, y canción.
En julio dijimos que la carrera a los premios incluiría una fuerte dósis de proyectos basados en la realidad, y ciertamente ésto se manifestó. Cinco de las nueve nominadas a la mejor película son basadas en hechos de la vida real (“Captian Phillips,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Philomena,” “12 Years a Slave,” y “The Wolf of Wall Street”), mientras que una sexta fue inspirada por hechos reales (“American Hustle”).
Los nueve contendientes a la mejor película salieron en el cuarto trimestre, desde el 3 de octubre con “Gravity” al 25 de diciembre con “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
Muchos de los principales nominados de este año tocan temas importantes como el de la economía (“American Hustle,” “Blue Jasmine,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” ), el cuidado de salud (“Dallas Buyers Club”), el terrorismo (“Captain Phillips”), la supervivencia (“12 Years a Slave” y “Gravity”) y la tecnología (“Her” y ” Gravity”).
Y luego están los temas clásicos americanos de la familia: “August: Osage County,” “Nebraska” y “Philomena.”

Los nominados reflejan cierta diversidad racial y cultural, lo que subraya el hecho de que la industria del cine tiene que reflejar una sección transversal más amplia. Es una sensibilidad ampliada ya vista en el teatro y la televisión.
Históricamente, las nominaciones al Oscar raramente reflejan el éxito en taquilla. Con 670 millones de dólares a nivel mundial, “Gravity” fue la única nominada que también está entre las 10 películas más taquilleras del mundo.
Debido a que ha sido un buen año para el cine, hubieron algunos que no obtuvieron nominaciones, como James Franco (“Spring Breakers”), James Gandolfini (“Enough Said”) y Scarlett Johansson (“Her”). También hubieron películas estupendas que nunca ganaron fuerza en términos de premios, incluyendo “The Place Beyond the Pines,” “Rush,” “Labor Day” y “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.”
Las nominaciones fueron anunciadas a las 5:38 am en la sede de la Academia en Beverly Hills, California.
La votación para los miembros de la Academia corre del 14 al 25 de febrero. Los premios serán entregados en la ceremonia en el Dolby Theatre el 2 de marzo, y transmitido en vivo por la cadena ABC.
