After more than two weeks hospitalized, Muhammad Ali has been released from the hospital.
The legendary boxer, 72, was admitted into an undisclosed medical center on December 20 after he was originally diagnosed with a mild case of pneumonia and now is said to have been a urinary tract infection.
“Muhammad Ali was released from the hospital last night,” a spokesperson for the family commented on Wednesday, Jan. 7. “After further observation and testing, doctors determined that Ali was suffering from a severe urinary tract infection, not pneumonia as originally diagnosed. The boxing legend has fully recovered and is now at his home.”
The three-time world heavyweight champion, who is relaxing at his Arizona estate, is said to be, “Look[ing] forward to celebrating his upcoming 73rd birthday on January 17th with his family and friends.”
“The Ali Family greatly appreciates the outpouring of support and continued well wishes. They also want to thank the team of doctors and nurses for their exceptional care.”
Ali is currently married to his wife of 28 years, Lonnie Ali, and is father to seven daughters. The iconic athlete has suffered from Parkinson’s disease since 1984 and the incurable condition has affected his speech.
The greatest boxer of our time is in the best care possible and in an interview with AARP, his wife commented, “If there was ever anyone who always lands on his feet and comes out smelling like a rose, it is Muhammad. It is his remarkable attitude toward life. He never has let anything stand in his way.”
