Fox Searchlight has debuted the first digital poster for The Birth of a Nation. The Sundance standout released a digital video Tuesday that sees the graphic design of slave revolt leader Nat Turner being bled onto the screen, eventually revealing the movie’s poster.
Nate Parker wrote, directed, starred in the film, which follows the story of Turner and his failed slave rebellion in the antebellum south.
The film stars Armie Hammer, Mark Boone Jr., Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis, Dwight Henry, Aja Naomi King, Esther Scott, Roger Guenveur Smith, Gabrielle Union, Penelope Ann Miller and Jackie Earl Haley.
Fox Searchlight acquired the rights to the film at Sundance for $17.5 million.
“From the moment we saw this film we knew we wanted to join Nate Parker in fulfilling his vision as the film’s portrayal of injustice is unfortunately still relevant today,” said Fox Searchlight Presidents Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula in a statement. “His dedication and artistry in revitalizing Nat Turner’s legacy and place in history has resulted in an extraordinarily compelling and moving film that delivers on every level. The ensemble cast, led by Nate Parker, is committed and exceptional.”
The Birth of a Nation hits theaters Oct. 7, 2016.
