Amy Winehouse’s father has for the past year publicly denounced the portrayal of his late daughter in the documentary Amy. The film was directed by Asif Kapadia and took home an Oscar Sunday night in the Best Documentary category.
Mitch Winehouse, who has described the film as a “negative, spiteful and misleading portrayal” of the “Back to Black” singer, took to Twitter after the Kapadia’s Oscar win to express the following: “Always proud of my baby. Amy will not get an Oscar though. Just Asif Kapadia. That is what this is all about…Asif. He’s fooled everybody.”
He later added, “I am not changing my stance just because the film won an Oscar. It’s a negative, spiteful and misleading portrayal of Amy. We will fix this.”
Kapadia dedicated his win to Amy Winehouse, who died of accidental alcohol poisoning in 2011. During his acceptance speech he described the singer as “funny, intelligent, witty — someone special, someone who needed looking after,” adding that their main goal was “to make a film to show the world who she really was.”
