Pablo Escobar is about to be hunted down and killed during the second season of the popular Netflix series, Narcos leaving audiences to wonder where the story will go next? As the sophomore season is getting ready to premiere on September 2, keep a close eye on Cali Cartel leader Gilberto Rodriguez-Orejuela.
During an interview with Damian Alcazar, who is set to play Orejuela in the series, told Variety Latino his character might be the focus. He mentioned off-camera that there have been talks about this happening.
“I would love it,” Alcazar said about taking over the reigns of the series to Variety Latino. “I am guessing that is what they plan to do. If they plan to follow the nightmarish route of the drug trade, there’s are so many places they can take his [story].”
Gilberto Jose Rodriguez Orejuela, also known as El Ajedrecista (The Chess Player), formed the Cali Cartel alongside his two brothers in the 1970’s. At one time, the Cartel supplied 80% of the cocaine trafficked into the United States and 90% of the cocaine in the European market.
Rodriguez-Orejuela was arrested by the Colombian National Police on June 9, 1995, and then freed temporarily in November 2002. He was re-captured in March of 2003 before being extradited to the United States in March 2005 where he and his brother Miguel were sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of conspiring to import cocaine into the United States.
He is currently serving his sentence in a medium-security facility in Tennessee.
