Last month, Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams revealed he welcomes more diversity in the Star Wars franchise, including gay characters. Now, Mark Hamill says that his character, Luke Skywalker, could be gay.
“I just read online that J.J. is very much open to that,” he said in a recent interview with the Sun. “In the old days, you would get fan mail, but now fans are writing and asking all these questions: ‘I’m bullied in school … I’m afraid to come out.’ They say to me: ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”
Abrams previously said that it’s important for movies to reflect the way the world looks.
“When I talk about inclusivity, it’s not excluding gay characters, it’s about inclusivity,” Abrams told a group of reporters at the Oscar Wilde Awards at the end of February. “To me the fun of Star Wars is exploring the possibilities, so it seems insanely narrow-minded to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”
Openly gay characters have yet to be introduced in Star Wars films, but they have appeared in recent tie-in books, including the Imperial defector Sinjir Rath Velus in Star Wars: Aftermathand Moff Delian Mors in Lords of the Sith.
Star Wars: Episode VIII began production on Feb. 15 and will be directed by Rian Johnson (Looper). The film will be released on December 15, 2017.
Qué chiste. Por supuesto que todo mundo puede ser gay sin que te lo digan, sólo hace falta un poco de imaginación.
